I read a very interesting article on cnet news on Tuesday, dealing with fb's decision to block the export of "friends" contact information. I would like your opinion on their actions. Where they trying to protect their users identity or themselves?

It's likely that they are looking out for their own gains and benefits. People pay to obtain this sort of information. Where people are providing FB with the information at no charge to them, if someone is looking for a list for advertisement or marketing, they are accessing this information for free. When they would otherwise have to pay for the information/data. FB finding a way to block access to that information, seems to be more than just protecting the users' information, considering the users were the ones who provided them with the information in the first place. I would be willing to bet that they will find a way to sell this information to companies in the future.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very interesting scenario. Personal information is valuable to any online community particularly when it can be used for commercial purposes. I think they are looking out for both themselves and their users, since people will feel uncomfortable that theirs as well as their friends' personal information my be conveniently exported to another site during normally networking activity.
